Having been off the water for a week a late race report may be good for all.

A perfect Autumn day was fitting for the final race of the Special Trophies Series. The wind was cool but the sun was warm. And the humidity was less than 99%! The three usual combatants lined up (Still Festering, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Axis of Evil) , but the barrel chested men were reduced to only two, with an incident involving a ladder and some stitches keeping the Rear Commodore on his rear and not on the boat.
Early start for our boat LoEG as there was some needed maintenance to be done, 4 ropes to replace, broken Van block and patch a hole we made last week in the headsail.
We also saw that Axis was replacing rope on the mast with Mitch from SF working hard five meters above the deck. That’s real team work in Div. 1. Last saturday saw the first handicap race in this Autumn season in a NE 8-16 knots . First off the mark Windfalls had a 4 minute advantage over XWP. First stage of the race was WF holding the lead in the uphill stages and then around mark 6 the downwind stage that has seen the boats with spinnakers race away was upon us.
The day started with a great wind which built during the day from 10 to 15 knots NE. Good sailing conditions.
Upon arrival at the club we found Pat playing with water again. He was using his gurney to clean steps and ensure all are safe....thanks Pat. A beautiful day on the river was predicted with a week of high temperatures and strong sea breezes during the day being the norm so why would Saturday be any different... The starter put us on the NE alternative course which sends the boats up to Goat Island, down the Balmain shore then back in front of the club for a couple of laps.
With the globe girdling Barry "Who" once again missing, we set off on the intrepid AOE with 2 regulars and also the very brave Simon, who has volunteered as sheethand for the day.
We started on Number 1 course in a lovely ESE breeze as usual battling the maxi's of division 1 and as usual more than holding our own (should I rephrase that? :)) On the day that McCallum hit the fastest Test Match Century in the history of cricket, we, the skipper and crew of League of Elegant Gentleman claim that we now hold the record for the fastest PRSC Harbour Race in the history of sailing.
How did this happen? Read on and all will be revealed. Sailing on the Parramatta River in summertime - does it get much better than this? The breeze filled in just before the start for Division 3 and we were set for the afternoon. Our assistant starters (Pete and Carmel) set us on a #5 course, our alternate course for a good Sydney nor-easter. That would set us up for a lovely long spinnaker run from Cockatoo Is all the way back to #1 in Putney.
Conditions for the day were SSE wind of 10 – 15 kts sunshine with a trip up the harbour around Shark Island then return.
Again the normal 3 combatant’s lined up for battle on Saturday awaiting the 13:30 gun to begin. Still Festering with sail maker on board hoping for a 2nd headsail breeze so he could view his new creation on The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen a wish that was granted for just before the 5min gun the new headsail was hoisted. |
