Mind you, they had a JIB up, the last time any of them used a jib was on a 12. Stll, it must have taken massive amounts of courage for them to be there so well done, girls! Or perhaps after the previous week maybe they had been busy getting a new sail made, copying Pat from Still Festering, who seems to produce a new sail for every condition, except for a spinnaker, when its over 5 Knott's of blow. But lets see what happens today :)
Unlike last week Speed cracks a great start and is "on song" right from the start, demanding that his crew adheres to a regime of looking for every lift on the river, and calling every knock no matter how minute. But today Willo has decided to stamp his trademark control and mastery of the river out for all to see, he will really but on a show out there today to show that he is "the king of the river". With great boat speed, and sails that have been selected perfectly the crew were grateful, for they worked the river to Morrison bay like champions. On rounding the mark the girls also set the spinnaker, which naturally shocked everyone, but Speed reassures us that the crew has done nothing to now, so we wait to watch our friends crumble.
But off season conditioning and rigorous training has made these girls worthy combatants, pity they could not handle the storm of last week!
As LOEG and SF round mark 5 Both AOE and the depleted Resurgent with out Greg work like hell to catch up.
The long work back up the river show how evenly balanced all boats are, although the AOE gets punished in the holes through lack of LWL and Sail Area, all we can hope for is that the handicaps gods may fall our way in the future as the August/September winds turn into the trademark Nor'easters.
Again heading in to Hen and Chicken Bay to mark 4, we enjoy the close racing of division 3 boats Farrgo and A Fine Balance clash for positions at the mark rounding with LOEG and S F. The tall ships sail over the division3 boats, Once the breeze gets full on 3/4 these big Adams hulls are off we and Resurgent have a job to stay in touch.
As we approach Cabarita we see both LOEG and SF getting smashed by fresh westerly breeze as the poke their noses around the corner and we hope we can survive, however we close the gap as the tall ships get blown side ways in the big gusts.
At the top mark the heroic AOE crew throw up the spinnaker for another ride of our lives, we chase down the tall ships that are all displaying limited ticker on this run, to finish closely behind, Willo and his boys, who were followed closely by Pat and his full crew on SF, Resurgent was not far behind us. Greg you may have made all the difference on Saturday, but thank you for the photos, at the start of the race.
A big, warm welcome to James and Elly on Memphis, which is now a part of division 3.
Cheers
