Rigging the boat, we had what looked like a light westerly, as we ventured out for a pre race sail with our most experienced skipper at the helm (Eddie), what little breeze there was died off to nothing, so we thought great the sea breeze is about to come in. A light westerly came back in, and with the confidence of Weather Oracles the starters put us on a westerly course. The combined start was reasonably uneventful with Still Festering showing their intentions early and jumping to what would be become a healthy lead on the first leg. But wait, is that a sea breeze coming up the river behind us? As we looked back, a flood of colour filled the river, so up with the purple rocket and off we head, closing in on SF who are still on a light westerly. Just as we were about to reach SF the weather gods said that's enough sea breeze for one day and back came the westerly. Quickly dumping the kite we got around number 1 not too far behind with the rest of the fleet bearing down. Being off a breeze, but gun shy after the last leg, we decided drinks were the order and settled for the same positions rounding number 5. By this time the wind had decided ENE would be nice, so it's time to get serious, up goes big Red. A few southerly and northerly slants made for an interesting sail back to 1 but again no change in positions. Getting to the fourth mark was problematic, with the NE deciding it was going to hang around with the occasional southerly belt to keep us on our toes. Rounding number 4 we are just ahead of SF and the rest of the fleet now starting to spread apart. All the way down to the marina it was a battle between NE, SW & W with the westerly prevailing at Cabarita point along with SF who steal a march down to number 1 with the westerly now telling everyone which direction to pay attention.
Coming back up to number 5 we are still in touch with SF when we spot Resurgent rounding Cabarita point with a headsail on the deck, not sure what happened but it didn't look good as it was being packed away when they passed! Carrying on to the finish SF deservedly takes line honours and LoEG gets the chocolates on handicap with SF 2nd and Axis 3rd.
Well done to the Starters...
Cheers
