SE breeze 10-15 knots with maybe a tad more out of H+C Bay. 4.30pm high tide – but only 1.21m so not much influence.
The usual Div1 suspects got a close start with Axis of Evil (AOE, good to see Jimmy back on board after a couple of months working too hard) getting the jump a bit to leeward of Resurgent (RSGT), Still Festering (SF) to leeward of them followed by League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (LOEG). AOE got to the true breeze around Abbotsford Pt first and soon had the bilge pump active after a gust came through, and rounded Abbotsford followed by SF, RSGT, LOEG.

Down to Morrisons with kites RSGT went through SF who were having a kite-free beer and skittles day probably to celebrate their scratch and hcap win in the Combined Clubs West Harbour Summer Series Race 1 at Drummoyne last Sunday – top effort guys, another good effort to follow the Pyrmont Cup win late last year. RSGT closed up a bit on AOE under kite then it was a nice work up to H+C where SF went through back to 2nd, AOE slipped away a tad and LOEG hung in strongly.
Around H+C for a bear away kite set then quick gybe to get shy across the front of Cabarita, gybe again to get down to Morrisons and RSGT flew right up on AOE’s stern at the mark to be a boat length off the lead. Back up to H+C the work to the Cabarita corner freed up a tad and RSGT footed through AOE to hit the lead by half a boat length – albeit to leeward - and SF was coming into the corner tight with intent. With the corner just cleared RSGT tacked under AOE in order to clear SF, but as a result got too low on port across Cabarita east and had to tack out again, then tacked under SF to start the long port hand drag leg to Harmony Point then back on stbd to the east bay shore and the mark. AOE slipped away well to round first followed by SF, and LOEG closed up.
Another good kite run to Morrisons followed but unfortunately SF had vang problems which needed sheets off to fix - so around there the last time it was AOE, RSGT, SF, with LOEG hanging in well despite now running with poled genoa.
The final work to Abbotsford was a cracker as SF got away to leeward of RSGT but by Abbotsford Pt both had closed right up on AOE with tight reaching speed across the front of the club with the breeze out of Frances, and at the final Abbotsford mark it was AOE, SF, RSGT with only 5 boat lengths in it. It was a right log jam with Windfalls rounding at the same time and the breeze having a rest – but AOE got around well and slipped away with a top kite set, hotly pursued by SF pushing up after the point on the southern shore to try and take the tide to the short end of the line – but in fickle breeze. AOE held out in mid-stream, as high as possible reaching with big kite under an increasing southerly wind lane coming out of Frances, however could not hold off SF who cross 6seconds ahead. A dead heat would have been cricket. RSGT crossed soon after, followed by LOEG with the fleet finishing within 4mins. On hcap it was RSGT, AOE, SF, LOEG.
It was a packed clubhouse that evening for a most enjoyable bbq superbly hosted by LOEG – many thanks to them.
Next week is summer series race 6 and the last in the series. Forecast this far out is 15kts N at start rising to 18kts and swinging to NE so potentially a fitting way to finish the series – trust this forecast holds.
