Twilight Series B - Heat 10

Race Report From Lennie on Hot Stuff....

The boys brought the boat into the wharf & we were waiting for one more crew to arrive.  While waiting the wind was blowing up to 15 knots. It was pretty wet too. We got out on the water with minutes to spare for the start. There were 3 boats in the race, Blur, Hot Stuff, and Still Festering. We changed head sails all up 3 times with 1 on a down winded run only to find we were coming 2nd in between 5 to 7 knots of wind, so we chased Mich & crew on Still Festering all night long.

Still Festering come across the line 1st and then Hot Stuff got a gust of wind on the line to cross the line in 2nd place, and Blur drifted back to the finish line in 3rd place. Handicap results were Hot Stuff in first place, Still Festering in second and Blur in third place.

Twilight Series B - Heat 8

Report by Len Player

Wind looked like it was going to be a quick race and Michelle sailing SF started right on the line when the gun went with Hot Stuff close behind. Shifting winds and varying pressure made it difficult to sail these conditions, and being on the right side of them meant the leaders got away from the rest of the fleet.

Hot Stuff with the old sailors from A12FS keep Still Festering looking over their shoulder and they finished across the line first Hot Stuff 2nd and Black Velvet coming in 3rd. The minor places where very close. Special mentions also for Blur, Farrago, Pink Panther and Bush Telegraph.

Racing in the twilights in a good way the release the mid week stress level and drinks back at the club always produces some tall stories.

Editors note: Twilight Series B has two more races to go and the series is far from decided, so if you can't make it out on the water, why not come down to the club to watch.

Div 1 - Special Trophies - Race 6

24/3/2016

A perfect Autumn day was fitting for the final race of the Special Trophies Series. The wind was cool but the sun was warm. And the humidity was less than 99%! The three usual combatants lined up (Still Festering, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Axis of Evil) , but the barrel chested men were reduced to only two, with an incident involving a ladder and some stitches keeping the Rear Commodore on his rear and not on the boat.

On the day that McCallum hit the fastest Test Match Century in the history of cricket, we, the skipper and crew of League of Elegant Gentleman claim that we now hold the record for the fastest PRSC Harbour Race  in the history of sailing.

How did this happen? Read on and all will be revealed.

Conditions for the day were SSE wind of 10 – 15 kts sunshine with a trip up the harbour around Shark Island then return.

Again the normal 3 combatant’s lined up for battle on Saturday awaiting the 13:30 gun to begin. Still Festering with sail maker on board  hoping for a 2nd headsail breeze so he could view his new creation on The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen a wish that was granted for just before the 5min gun the new headsail was hoisted.

Division 3 - Special Trophies - Race 4

Saturday’s weather saw a light SE breeze leading to the regular discussion of which jig to choose.  With some fresh gusts coming through we settled on the number 2 jib.  The breeze was around 10 knots coming in from the SE but tending ESE and occasionally swinging back South to make it interesting.

Division 1 - Special Series - Race 3

The day started with the threat of freshening south winds down the harbour. Observations before the start though put us in two minds about which headsail to use. A few judicious web checks determined it was #2 weather, so that was that sorted. As usual, all three yachts had a slightly different line to hit the start on.

Division 1 - Special Series - Race 2

As covered in the division 3 report it was to be a race where correct sail selection would win the day. With our own “Larry Ellisons” on board LOEG and Still Festering having multiple “hi tech” sail wardrobes from which to choose, it is a difficult task for even these masters of the river to get correct. On the Axis however, it’s quite simple, just drag the same sails out from under the deck and throw them up the big stick! Makes for much easier prerace planning and hydration sessions!

Division 3 - Special Series Race 2

Special Series race 2 was held on course 6 up around Fort Denison in an average 10-12 knot NE which was very patchy / gusty and swung, needing constant watch to maintain boat speed. See recordings taken at Fort Denison – highest recorded gust 21knots. Note that the gust wind speed below is a far higher multiplier than the norm – typical of an early summer unstable noreaster – these FortD recordings would not be influenced by funnelling out of the river bays.
