We were greeted by a glorious Sydney day. Winds were light at only 4 or 5 knots so were a little surprised to see the Long Course flag flying. As it turned out Peter and Carmel were right to keep to the program and send us to the harbour. It was a nice sunny afternoon for a Long harbour race. We were out late from the mooring as we were missing a crew member, missing our usual pre race cruise, so we headed over to Sydney rowers to say hello to our skipper on the balcony celebrating early her birthday......
Firstly I want to say, how good was that dinner put on by Still Festering after the first Long Course race of the session. Standing Pork Rib Roast sliced into succulent pork chops with gravy & apple sauce, perfect jacket spuds, juicy corn on the cob and a selection of salads lovely & fresh. Topped off with ice cream for dessert. Wonderful!
Anyway what am I supposed to talking about? Ah yes, the race. .... Unfortunately skipper Carolyn was unwell but her generosity and faith in the crew had Xena Warrior Princess cross the starting line, without her, merely a second or two after the hooter........
Lola takes message from Carl. “Tell Ron to be at club before 12.00 as it is an early start Long Harbour Course”. Lola also wants to be dropped off in the city. Ron rushes (he is not used to this), drops Lola off and reaches PRSC at 11.28 (also not used to being this early). Ron immediately notices something different about the club, the rubbish bin that normally stands next to the recycle bin is missing! A forensic search of the club is launched but reveals nothing........
The first long course race was eagerly anticipated with the 20-25 knot southerly forecast to come in around 9am – which it did. The thought was that it would be reasonably stable by start time but this was a tad wishful, with peak gusts on the harbour recorded at 30 and less than half that at times – guess a normal southerly change breeze. The wind was given the respect it deserved with SF and LOEG going for non-overlapping jibs and full mains, Resurgent (RSGT) the same but with a reef in the main, and AOE after a late appearance hoisted their well proven suit.
First race back after the festive season and everyone was still seemingly in holiday mode, or at least partially influenced - but shouldn’t speak for others. Huey the wind god was fully hung over and had a total shocker as was clearly evidenced throughout the afternoon no matter where on the harbour you were – the wind frequently coming from 3 directions at once, at 4 strengths……..the unrequested input mate is that if you’re going to put in another wind effort like that this season it’s best to hand over to your 2IC and have a well needed rest, better still don’t come back leave it to him. Thanks in advance.

The day began with the prediction of a strong south to south east breeze which never really got up to the predicted 15 to 20 kts.The normal 3 antagonists from div 1 rocked up all in good spirits after the xmas break. The day began with a typical summer NSW Sydney harbour forecast a 15 to 20 Knt NE sea breeze for our trip up to South Head YA rounding mark. The three normal antagonists lined up for our trek up the harbour (SF, LEOG & AE).
Long course series race 2 up to Taylors Bay and back – 8-16knt noreaster which had a lot of east in it, and swung and gusted a bit. High tide 4.39pm, super sailing conditions.
AFB won the start nicely at mid line followed to windward by FGO and RBO – XWP trailing unusually – and the sprint on starboard to the first tack was on. |
